The first day of school can be scary for the children, as well as the parents. The best thing we can do is discuss it in detail ahead of time, and help our children feel as prepared as they can possibly be. Rather than imposing our own fears onto our children, we should speak positively about what they can expect; meeting new friends, learning new things, and carrying their fancy new backpacks! Become as familiar as you can with the school environment prior to the first day; meet your child’s teacher, show them their new cubby, and give them a chance to warm up to the new environment.
The first day of school is filled with many emotions. Your child may come home with endless stories, or they may tell you they did nothing all day! The first day serves as an opportunity for the children to adjust to their new environment, teacher, and friends. There may be some tears, but rest assured it is quite normal.
